Undergraduate Intern - Proxy Applications and Abstractions
The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.
PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.
Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.
Responsibilities
The internship will entail developing efficient abstractions for building proxy applications on heterogeneous systems using portable programming models. Converged applications require converged programming models to facilitate explicit data movement conveniently, hence efficient abstractions are paramount for bridging the software barriers. Problems of interests are parallel applications that are prone to irregular memory accesses and are bandwidth bound (machine learning, graph analytics, etc.). Basic concepts pertaining to computer organization/memory hierarchy and HPC communication models are relevant skill sets.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Preferred Qualifications:
Student in good standing, expected steady academic progress towards an Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field. Knowledge of core parallel computing concepts, basic CS algorithms, HPC hardware architecture for performance optimization, with an active interest in building proxy applications using portable programming models.
