Formability Co-op - Novi, MI

The Novelis Novi, CSC team is seeking a Formability Co-Op. The person in this role will report to Pete Coutilish (Forming Lead). Using aluminum for automotive body structures is growing as automakers lightweight cars to make traditional gas vehicles more efficient and strive for longer ranges and good towing capacity of electric vehicles. The Novelis Customer Solution Center in Novi, MI has state-of-the-art equipment for measuring parameters essential to forming parts in aluminum alloys.  This includes a 400T servo press, a Bending Under Tension machine for measuring friction when metal is deforming under load, and an Interlaken formability press.  The Co-Op will work on a project to develop datasets with hands-on experimentation and feed into computer simulations of stamping (using tools such as LS-DYNA or Auto Form), with the goal of improving confidence in simulation models.  Additionally, this data can be fed to automotive customers to improve confidence in using new aluminum alloys.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate formability datasets for existing and new Novelis products.
  • Build integrated program plans including schedule, communications plan, and applicable project management.
  • Evaluate formability (stamping and advanced characterizations) of new alloys including high recycled content.
  • Produce successful stampings, 3D scans of formed panels, strain mapping, bending and mechanical properties with the ability to dive deeper into the advanced formability characterization of new alloys.

Qualifications:

  • 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year student in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with manufacturing interest, Material Engineering with metal forming interest.
  • Hands-on, creative problem solver, collaborative, basic understanding of metal formability
  • Ability to turn datasets into useful information for engineers.
  • Desire to work in a laboratory setting and conducting hands-on work.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage with team members.
  • Willingness to learn

What you can expect to gain/learn from this opportunity:

  • Deep understanding of formability parameters and methods to measure them.
  • Learn how formability parameters are applied in the industry.
  • Learning how to use state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Work with a full-size stamping press to explore formability of different aluminum alloys.
  • Exposure and engagement with our team of technical experts as well as with leadership
  • Understanding of customer relationships and challenges

What We Offer

All full-time co-ops working 30 hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the Novelis Medical Plans. As a co-op you will also be eligible for paid holidays as outlined in the Novelis holiday schedule for the designated location.
