Organization: Department of Natural Resources and Conservation 

Location: Missoula 

Duration: Not to exceed 90 days 

Hours: Variable, flexible hours (5-30 hours per week) 

Compensation: $18-$25 DOE 

 

Overview: The DNRC is seeking a creative graphic designer intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to environmental education and conservation efforts by designing engaging and informative interpretive trail signs at the Missoula DNRC campus. The selected candidate will work under the guidance of the Forestry Communications Coordinator ensuring alignment with communications strategies and objectives. The goal of the project is to enhance the visitor experience, communicate native tree species information, and promote awareness of Montana Trust Lands management, and other DNRC programs and initiatives. 

 

Responsibilities:  

1. Design and Conceptualization: 

  • Collaborate with the Forestry Communications Coordinator to conceptualize and create interpretive trail signs that educate visitors about the Missoula DNRC campus including its buildings, programs and trees. 
  • Integrate creative and visually appealing elements to enhance the interpretive experience. 

2. Content Development: 

  • Research and gather relevant information on the local ecology and natural history to inform content creation. 
  • Work with program managers to ensure accuracy and clarity of the information presented on the signs. 

3. Graphic Design: 

  • Utilize graphic design software to develop visually appealing layouts, incorporating images, illustrations, and text. 
  • Ensure designs align with DNRC branding and communication guidelines. 

4. Field Research: 

  • Conduct field visits to the DNRC Southwestern Land Office and DNRC Nursery to gather inspiration and firsthand knowledge for sign content. 

5. Documentation: 

  • Maintain detailed records of design processes, revisions, and finalized versions. 
  • Provide documentation for future reference and potential expansion of interpretive signage projects. 

 

Qualifications:  

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a graphic design, environmental science, or related program. 
  • Proficient in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). 
  • Strong creative and conceptual thinking skills. 
  • Passion for forestry education and conservation. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
