Science & Technology Organization Co-Op Overview  

Envision working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Co-Ops.  

The Science & Technology (S&T) organization within AbbVie Operations leads the optimization, validation, implementation, continuous improvement, and global technical support for therapeutic proteins. The S&T Co-Op program provides students with robust projects based on business need. Students will do meaningful work that has a real impact on our business and patients worldwide. Possible 2024 Fall Co-Op assignments are in the following departments:   

BioProcess Development: The department’s mission is to design, deliver and support the biologics manufacturing process for AbbVie’s pipeline and partnered products through clinical development and commercial life cycle with quality, speed, and manufacturing excellence. This is achieved through a focus on targeted product quality, CMC acceleration, people development, and efficient workflows. Key groups include: Cell line development, Cell culture process development, Purification process development, Scale-up lab, and Analytical development.  

Cell Culture Process Development: Responsibilities include development of the upstream cell culture process to ensure the product quality and optimize the productivity of the biologics. The department supports development activities of multiple programs for late-stage, R&D, and discovery projects.  

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Executes experiments in lab-scale and AMBR bioreactors for bioprocess development and manufacturing support with supervision.  
  • Performs data acquisition, organization and analysis in a timely manner. Assists in experimental designs, data interpretation, and mathematical model building. 
  • Documents work appropriately in lab notebooks and technical memos; contributes to writing technical reports.  
  • Maintains lab equipment and optimizes lab operations for efficient use of time and resources.  
  • Troubleshoots equipment and experimental problems.   
  • Assists in continuous improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s (PhD candidates encouraged to apply) program in a scientific or engineering discipline (preferably Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Biosciences/Bioengineering).  
  • Must be returning to university the semester following your Co-Op. 
  • Must be able to commit to a 6-month program from June – December at AbbVie’s Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA. 

Preferred Requirements (Optional):  

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher preferred 
  • Excellent problem-solving, written, and verbal skills 
  • Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and project management skills 
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, initiative, and integrity 
  • Hands on experience with culturing mammalian cells in shake flasks 
  • Hands on experience with the lab-scale and AMBR bioreactor operation 
  • Familiar with mathematical modeling (PCA and/or CNN) is a plus 
  • Familiar with the Raman Spectroscopy is a plus
