If so, we are seeking a Timber Cruiser and Small Sales Forester (Natural Resource Specialist 1 In-Training or Natural Resource Specialist 2) to serve under the supervision of the Pacific Cascade Region Forest Check Cruiser.

The Timber Cruiser and Small Sales Forester position is a vital position that contributes to the success of meeting our goals and objectives both long and short-term while supporting specialized functions within the PC Region state land management programs. The Timber Cruiser and Small Sales Forester's primary function supports the PC Region by performing as a timber cruising specialist, determining cruise design, collecting stand data, and analyzing cruise data. Duties also include performing as a lead forester on small timber sales and timber sale contract compliance including regeneration, and other silvicultural practices. This position may support the fire suppression program during peak workloads in the PC Region.

Responsibilities:

• Acts as one of the region's timber cruising specialists. Observes and mentors foresters in timber cruising methods objectives, and techniques.
• Reviews completed sales for possible problems in stand management objectives, operational impacts and recommends adjustments to district staff.
• Ensures timber cruises meet all agency policies and guidelines.
• Determines cruise design. Measures and grades trees for volume by species.
• Collects stand data for updating the agency’s Forest Resource Inventory System (FRIS) and to ensure compliance with the HCP, Forest Practice rules, and department guidelines.
• Analyze cruise data providing marketing and economic feedback to region personnel for best and most profitable use.
• Serves as the Project Lead on small timber sales and silvicultural activity proposals and contracts, ensuring all aspects of the project are reviewed, complied, and documented from project inception to completion.

This may be filled as an in-training position. This is designated as a 12-24 month training plan. If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time, we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered as Natural Resource Specialist 1 (NRS2 In-Training) or Natural Resource Specialist 2, depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
Natural Resource Specialist 1 (NRS2 In-Training)  
(Salary range: $3,700 - $4,968 per month):
 

• An Associate’s degree in forest management or related natural resource field;
  OR a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
• Knowledge of general forest management theory.
• Computer skills such as MS Word, and MS Excel, with an aptitude for learning new software programs.
• Knowledge of navigating using maps, aerial photos, compass, orthophotos, clinometer, radio, laser rangefinder, and GPS.
• Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
• Dedication to a Safe Workplace.  Demonstrates leadership in the maintenance and development of a safe and healthy work environment.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Natural Resource Specialist 2  
(Salary range: $4,174 - $5,615 per month):
An Associate’s degree in forest management or related natural resource field; and one year of forestry experience at the entry-level,
OR a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

• Experience in general forest management theory (timber management planning, silviculture, appraisal techniques, timber sales, contract preparation and administration, forest fire prevention and suppression, logging and forest road construction, reforestation methods, public relations, and statistical analysis).
• Experience with cruising and forest mensuration techniques including measurement and marketability by species, grade, and defect.
• Experience using specialized cruising equipment and various software applications.
• Ability to inspect, instruct, and work with camp and contract crews to ensure silvicultural prescriptions are met.
• Experience in navigating using maps, aerial photos, compass, orthos, clinometer, radio, laser rangefinder, and chain.
• Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
