Agricultural Research Associate

Position: Research Associate

We are looking for a conscientious and knowledgeable research technician in the Palouse dryland cropping system (trials span from Walla Walla to Fairfield, with most concentrated around Genesee ID and Palouse WA).  The research associate will help conduct field trials to evaluate products, varieties, or agronomic solutions. They will be involved in all aspects of each trial, including planting, applications, evaluations, and harvest.  They must have keen observation skills and understand plant physiology and agronomy in order to discern differences between treatments. The research associate should be comfortable working alone and should be confident in problem solving and critical thinking.  They will help analyze trial results and summarize findings in professional reports. A successful candidate should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, passionate about improving agricultural practices, and have excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Drive GPS-enabled tractor and/or operate plot drill cone for trial planting.
  • Maintain plots and make product applications using a variety of equipment.
  • Take in-season measurements and evaluations, such as plant establishment, soil and tissue samples, disease/weed/insect control ratings, phytotoxicity, aerial imagery, etc.
  • Conduct crop quality assessments and harvest trials with plot combine.
  • Keep detailed records of all trial activities and crop stages.
  • Summarize data and compile research reports according to company template.
  • Attend industry meetings and maintain equipment during winter months.

Requirements 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain state pesticide application licensing (WA and ID).
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
  • Ability to carry 50 pounds, and work outside, stand, walk, and stoop for extended periods.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office.
  • Concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong decision making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Mechanical skills are of benefit.
