SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, the Mechanic maintains and repairs fleet vehicles, trucks, trailers, and related equipment. The incumbent also maintains shop tools, the shop area, and other equipment in a clean, safe and reliable condition. 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs timely preventive maintenance and repair on fleet vehicles including gas, diesel, and electric vehicles to ensure reliable and safe operation. Maintains tools, equipment and working environment in a clean and safe operating condition. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance and repair on light and heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoes, dozers, trenchers, forestry cutters, diggers, aerial devices, and cranes. Performs maintenance and repair on various equipment hydraulic systems. Reads and interprets manuals pertaining to vehicle and equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. Uses diagnostic testing equipment to troubleshoot and identify vehicle and equipment problems. Performs all work in a safe manner and follows all safe work practices and procedures. Performs welding to assist in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Completes required forms, either written or through computer application, to ensure accurate records on all vehicles, including oil and filter change intervals, fuel usage, and repair frequency.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors required.  
Education and Experience: Requires a high school diploma or GED, and a minimum of two years' experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance, or completion of a two-year vocational technical or similar training program in vehicle maintenance. Experience in both gasoline and diesel mechanics is preferred. Welding experience or certification is also preferred. 
Language Skills: Must be able to orally communicate effectively with supervision and fellow employees. Incumbent must be able to keep clear and concise written records.  
Math Skills: Must be able to perform basic math processes such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.  
Reasoning Ability: Must be able to analyze a mechanical problem, determine the cause, and apply reasonable solutions.  
Computer Skills: Must have some experience using a personal computer. 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: This job requires the incumbent to acquire and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and be a qualified driver under current Department of Transportation rules and regulations. 
WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Normally works a daytime weekday schedule, but may be required to work overtime, nights, holidays and weekends, and travel overnight with short notice.
