Special Education Teacher - Moderate/Severe
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of a Site Administrator or the Director, the Special Education Teacher provides instruction, assessment and program planning for special education students with Autism in a Non-Public School setting. The Special Education Teacher monitors and evaluates student progress toward IEP goals and problem behavior reduction as appropriate. Identifies instructional materials needed for progress toward IEP goals and increased success in the classroom setting. Land Park Campus utilizes various teaching methodologies to promote learning through a positive programming approach with Applied Behavior Analysis being the primary teaching methodology used.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Assess the abilities and needs of students utilizing various assessment tools on an individual basis (DRDP, Brigance, ABLLS, HELP and other tools as appropriate)
- Develop proposed goals and prepare written summary of present levels of performance, define areas of needs and strengths for presentation at IEP meetings
- Plan for special activities, develop materials/lessons to meet the needs of each student
- Teach academic subjects and functional self-help skills, using methods and aids to assist in the education and /or rehabilitation process
- Develop/adapt curriculum to make it relevant for each student assigned to classroom
- Observe students to evaluate, record progress, and detect any and all signs of progress and/or regression
- Work collaboratively with others including parents, DIS providers and agency representatives
- Assist students with their toileting, feeding and other personal matters as needed
- Promote health and safety concepts and social interaction with all students
SPECIAL SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of teaching methodologies such as Applied Behavior Analysis, TEACCH, PECS, etc
- Energetic, HIGHLY organized individual with strong verbal/written communication skills
- Dedication, patience, tact, flexibility in approach and ability to work collaboratively as a team
- Ability to successfully manage and train classroom staff
- Able to lead by example and motivate others to learn
- Able to maintain appropriate confidentiality and protect the rights of students at all times
- Knowledge in Microsoft Office and the Internet
- Ability to pass a Department of Justice screening
- Must provide proof of a negative TB screening
- This position requires the following physical activities: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, visual acuity, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelors degree and Moderate/Severe Credential
- A minimum of two years experience working with children/adolescents diagnosed with autism
