A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A LEAD TEACHER

As the Lead Teacher, you come to work each day excited and ready to make a difference in children’s lives. Working cooperatively with another teacher, you teach a class of 17 children. You develop weekly lesson plans to ignite the curiosity and growth of the children in our preschool. Additionally, you provide preventative health screenings to children including vision, hearing, and growth assessments. You track each child’s growth through observations, portfolio documentation, developmental checklist, and assessment data.

As a Head Start teacher, you not only provide an educational opportunity to children, but you work with the whole family to help them become more self-sufficient. Each year you conduct two home visits and two parent-teacher conferences. Because you are working with low-income families, you have been trained to provide referrals to community resources that families may need such as food stamps, food banks, health resources, etc.

The children are in the classroom Monday-Thursday for 3.5 hours, and the rest of your day is spent on case management, case notes, meeting with families, lesson planning, and collecting physical and dental exams for the children in your class. On Fridays, you participate in training or completing work for the classroom. While you have challenging moments, most of your time is spent having a lot of fun. Since you love interacting with children, you can definitely say that you get paid to do what you love.
