Timber Management Officer (EMNRD #5331)

Why does the job exist?
The purpose of the Forester/Timber Management Officer for the Cimarron District is to conduct and implement multiple forestry programs, advise State and private cooperators on the best forest practices to meet the land management objectives, work and help implement Federal cost share programs with local cooperators, conduct wildfire suppression and timber sale regulation resource protection activities, monitor and inspect Tree Farm participation and compliance, provide stewardship program guidance, and assist partner agencies, landowners and stakeholders to plan and implement large scale forest restoration projects.

How does it get done?
The Timber Management Officer (TMO) will promote stewardship of forest resources on state and private lands and with land management agencies and partners through the use of the EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) and other forest health programs. They will also direct and supervise the District timber resource program, which involves advising state and private cooperators on the best forest practices that meet their land management goals while maintaining the overall health of the watershed and implementing and enforcing State Forest Regulations. The TMO will provide assistance with the management of the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), Non-Federal Lands (NFL) and Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) grants by ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines and regulations and make periodic site visits to ensure on-the-ground project goals are being accomplished. They will provide forestry information to community members to advance understanding of Natural Resource Management, Wildfire Management, Urban and Community Forestry activities, such as urban tree planting and care, and Tree Boards. When possible, they will assist with wildfire suppression and management activities.

Who are the customers?
Primary customers are private forest landowners, cooperating natural resource agencies and other non-federal forested landowners such as local governments.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a BS in a natural resource related field, 2-4 years of experience in forestry with forest management or timber sales experience preferred.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science and/or Ecology and one (1) year of experience in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science or Ecology. Five (5) years of active duty service in the Armed Forces will substitute for the required education and experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.
