Interpretive Program Coordinator

POSITION OBJECTIVE: Springbrook Nature Center is currently recruiting dynamic and energetic candidates to work as part of the interpretive leadership team. This full time position will be responsible for ensuring excellence in programming, public events, day-camps, and exhibits, . 

Springbrook has 127 acres of native prairies, forests and wetlands, which hosts up to 150,000 visitors each year and is a popular interpretive center and destination for many throughout the Twin Cities and region. This position is part of a team that is responsible for the resources and facilities of the Nature Center while providing more than 700 environmental education and nature interpretation programs throughout the year. 
  1.  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Conduct environmental education programming for general public, schools and community groups on site and off site.
  2. Plan, prepare and evaluate interpretive programming for a variety of audiences.
  3. Assist with planning and scheduling facility rentals and community events.
  4. Assist with the volunteer program including recruitment, recognition, communication and training.
  5. Oversee care and treatment of the exhibit and program animals including, but not limited to: training of animal care volunteers, purchasing animal supplies, and providing animal care through feeding and enclosure maintenance.
  6. Work with nature center staff and volunteers to plan and implement community events.
  7. Oversee the Springbrook summer day camp program through hiring and supervision of staff, development of camp curriculum and fostering a culture of positivity, inclusion and excellence.
  8. Along with other staff, maintain the look and functionality of all public spaces including exhibits, classrooms and trails.
  9. Respond to inquiries by telephone, email and in person concerning a broad spectrum of natural resource information.
  10. Interact with park and interpretive center guests.
  11. Process program registrations and schedule groups and programs.
  12. Serve as a liaison to rental groups using the interpretive center.
  13. Promote programs and services using print, online and social media.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Education, Natural Science, or related field.
  2. Minimum of two years of experience in interpretive programming with youth.
  3. Ability to be imaginative and innovative in programming with youth.
  4. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  5. Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  6. Comfort working outdoors and ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience and comfort level with handling and caring for live animals.
  2. Comfortable using hand tools and performing outdoor work such as trail maintenance and habitat management.
  3. Excellent customer service skills and ability to engage with park visitors.
  4. High level of motivation to serve the public.
  5. Experience working with people from a diverse range of cultural, economic and social backgrounds in an educational setting.
  6. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution.
  7. Must act in a decisive manner, exercise good judgment, and deal with stressful situations, while maintaining flexibility to support and carry out directives.
  8. Ability to work varying shifts or times as tasks and assignments required.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals, co-workers, and the public, using tact and diplomacy.
  10. Punctual, reliable and dependable for schedules, activities and events.
  11. Ability to represent the City to other agencies and the public with a courteous, accurate, and businesslike attitude in all types of contact.
  12. Understanding of environmental and natural sciences systems and a basic understanding of human behavior and diverse cultures.
  13. Ability to apply methods, techniques and implementation of program development as well as youth and public education.
  14. Must have the ability to carry, lift, transport, set up, tear down displays, charts, event materials, supplies, equipment and/or items necessary for a variety of programs and events.
