Highway Engineer- INDOT Greenfield

Summary/Objective:
The Highway Engineer works as a professional engineer performing engineering work in connection with location design and construction of highways, bridges, and other structures at the Indiana Department of Transportation. Work is performed under the direction of a department supervisor.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Develops and prepares complete working plans by performing computations for geometrics, quantities, drainage structures, etc.;
  • Designs bridges, determining size, location, methods of assembly, and bridge component parts, such as steel or concrete beams, concrete piers and end bents, as required for specific loading;
  • Provides engineering expertise to field maintenance functions to resolve maintenance problems and provide effective maintenance services in such areas as building and grounds and equipment management;
  • Reviews engineering plans designed by consultants;
  • Conducts engineering work in supportive areas such as land surveying, signage, pavement, research, geotechnical and special studies;
  • Develops and/or reviews construction plans;
  • Generates standard detailed drawings using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software and manual drafting techniques;
  • Participates in field inspections;

Requirements:
  • Specialized knowledge of the engineering principles and practices typically developed through application of higher education to the highway industry and accumulating a level of experience that can be acknowledged through professional achievement;
  • Must be a Registered Engineer in the State of Indiana;
  • Knowledge of highway statutory, departmental, and administrative laws, rules and regulations;
  • Ability to prepare complete sets of working plans for the construction of assigned highway projects;
  • Ability to perform the algebraic, trigonometric, and higher mathematical computations applied to design operations;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
