 Under the supervision of the SC Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) Director, this position will support the SCCCR in carrying out all statistical and data management activities. The Statistician III will report to the SCCCR Director and work closely with the staff epidemiologist, database manager, and data quality control manager in support of all data and statistical activities including, but not limited to data management, quality control, and data use. Will perform other duties as needed to support SCCCR, BHIE, and DHEC strategic goals and objectives.
 
Creates and maintains (and improve processes for) large data files for various purposes: annual data submission (to CDC and NAACCR); data use (files for research and routine data requests, calculating incidence and mortality rates, cancer cluster evaluation, other as needed), data linkages (performs routine and special project data linkages (i.e., National Death Index, vital records, Best Chance Network, Indian Health Service, census data, other as needed); and, geocoding (oversees annual geocoding of cancer incidence and mortality data; performs quality
checks and merges results).

Collaborates with SCCCR epidemiologist to: review and evaluate statistical and epidemiological methods in research data applications (assists in data set preparation as needed); produce required and special statistical reports and products, and to support special projects; and, respond to routine, research, cancer cluster, and other/special data requests in a timely manner (within and outside of DHEC).

Collaborates with SCCCR database/IT/QC staff to streamline and improve processes for data collection, database management, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of special projects. Collaborates with the Bureau of Health Improvement and Equity (BHIE) to review data, statistics, interpretations, and statistical methods for appropriate use, and to review SAS programs for accuracy and efficiency.
 
State Minimum Requirements: 
A bachelor's degree with statistical courses and experience in statistics.

Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, or equivalent with at least twelve (12) credit hours in statistical courses and two (2) years of experience working with health-related data OR twelve (12) graduate hours in statistics or biostatistics. Working knowledge of and current user of SAS statistical software with at least two (2) years of SAS experience.

DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver's license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
