Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Reforestation Forester)

The Oregon Department of Forestry's (ODF) Mission is – To serve the people of Oregon by protecting, managing, and promoting stewardship of Oregon's forests to enhance environmental, economic, and community sustainability.

We have one permanent, full-time position available in the State Forest Program with the Oregon Department of Forestry located in Tillamook.  For specific questions regarding this position please contact Erick Finnell until September 13th, Reforestation Supervisor, at 503-815-7023. What will you do? You will help carry out technical forestry tasks associated with unit goals, goals which contribute to the mission of the Oregon Department of Forestry, as assigned by the Reforestation Unit Forester.

Because the Department's highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters. It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Highly motivated self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Clearly demonstrate experience and/or education in:
  • Reforestation methods and plantation maintenance including experience conducting/coordinating stocking surveys, planting inspections, animal damage control, tree protection measures, vegetation management, herbicide applications, or pre-commercial thinning evaluation and operations.
  • Displays a working knowledge level of experience in computers and GIS. This includes experience with software such as ESRI GIS, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and Outlook).
  • Ability to be highly motivated, working independently and efficiently on multiple tasks and issues.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resource field; OR Three years of experience in a Forestry or closely related natural resource field
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Applicator's License with Forest endorsement within 12 months of hire.
