GIS Specialist - Coastal Division

BIO-WEST is seeking to employ a full-time GIS Specialist in the Coastal Division in its Rosenberg, Texas, office. Under the direction of the Rosenberg Principal-in-Charge and senior project managers, this position will be responsible for providing GIS and cartographic support related to all facets of environmental consulting, including waters of the U.S., threatened and endangered species, cultural and historic resources, and marine remote sensing surveys throughout the Gulf Coast. Work will occur throughout Texas and the southern United States and may occasionally require travel and work outdoors with other technical staff. Candidates should have an ecological background and knowledge of natural and cultural landscapes, as well as a working knowledge of appropriate local, state, and federal law and regulations. The ideal candidate will be willing to join field crews on an as-needed basis to assist with data collection and other study efforts.

The candidate will also be responsible for BIO-WEST’s in-house GIS and Data Group with database management, data processing and analyzation, and maintenance. Additional duties as defined by BIO-WEST could include modeling and reporting, web and internet based server management, oversight and upkeep of client GIS database, operation and maintenance of web-based applications, and design and enforcement of enterprise solutions and standards.

With proper candidate and based on future client needs, additional duties and responsibilities may be identified. As a small, efficient, and flexible company, the ability for rapid advancement and increasing responsibility is also available within BIO-WEST.

Qualifications

Candidates should be detail oriented and have excellent communication skills, including technical writing and cartographic abilities. Candidate should be self-motivated, willing to learn, and work well in a team environment. Must be proficient with ESRI’s ArcGIS suite (ArcMap, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, etc.) and Google Earth, as well as the techniques and technologies used to collect GPS data and interpret aerial imagery and maps. Must be able to produce professional project maps in a short time frame when needed.

Minimum requirements: a BS degree in GIS, geography, planning, or a relevant field and four (4) years of related experience or an MS in a relevant field with two (2) years of experience.

Preferred qualifications: proficiency with Python, ModelBuilder, or HTML/CSS/JavaScript to maintain and develop custom applications. Experience with Trimble TerraSync, Pathfinder Office, Collector for ArcGIS, and/or other GPS software. Masters in GIS, Geography with relevant GIS coursework. Hydrographic Survey and Side-Scan Sonar experience.
