Skills Coach 1 - 3 Positions
Department: Program & Support Services Department
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: 1 - Swing Shift (Tues-Sat) 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM & 2 - Night Shift (Tues-Sat) & (Fri – Mon) 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM
Reports to:  Service Unit Supervisor, Program & Support Services Department Director

About the Company
The Healing Lodge of the Seven Nations is a youth residential treatment facility that provides a safe and caring healing environment for adolescents in need. Located on 51 acres, our wellness program provides a peaceful environment for treatment balanced in traditional, cultural and spiritual values and practices. These values and practices foster respect, honesty, generosity, strong cultural identification and hope for positive life changes. The Healing Lodge treatment program integrates traditional, spiritual and cultural values with chemical dependency and mental health counseling to create a holistic approach toward healing. Residents include both Native American and non-Native Youth from all areas of the country.

About the Position
Skills Coach 1 provides client-centered care by facilitating, participating, and monitoring the treatment activities of residents with substance disorders or co-occurring substance and psychiatric disorders. This a full-time position for a residential treatment facility. Must be willing and able to adhere to the core competencies listed below.

  • Client Care – Effectively redirects serious behaviors involving risk of physical harm to self or others or the destruction of property; demonstrates positive engagements with clients reinforcing proactive behaviors; ability to rationally detach from difficult behaviors, avoids coercive interventions from invitations to escalate or enter into conflict around insignificant behaviors. Required to lead Resident(s) in physical activities such as walking, running, bike rides, and snow tubing.
  • Communications – Communicate with supervisor and established a chain of command regarding daily operations and/or incidents; document all required information in a clear, legible, timely, concise and accurate manner.
  • Relationship – Respects authority; models direct and clear communications with peers, clients, and subordinates; culturally aware and respectful of differences; establish a helping relationship with the person receiving services by demonstrating empathy, respect, and genuineness in order to build trust.
  • Administrative – Ability to complete multiple tasks in a timely manner. Precisely document events and transactions specific to job duties in approved Agency formats; understands and adheres to program operating procedures. Attention to detail.
  • Technical – Utilizes Agency communication devices and information technology as a business tool; proficient, as required, in the use of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and related IT systems and software applications.
  • Business Acumen – Adheres to policies, procedures, and philosophy of the Healing Lodge of the Seven Nations mission statement. 
  • Professional – Behaves ethically; presents a professional image in appearance, communications and demeanor; adheres to Agency scheduling Policy; follows program activity schedules; committed to personal professional development; recognizes the importance of self-care.
  • Analytical – Assist in gathering information about basic and community living of the person receiving services to be used in the assessment process; implement designated interventions and behavioral management programs.
  • Leadership – Seek to participate in effective approaches and training to enhance job skills; seek opportunities to mentor new staff; ability to recognize unsafe behaviors, situations, and environments; act to maintain the safety and well-being of persons receiving services, staff and community members. Ability to lead and remain calm under pressure.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:
  • High School Diploma or a GED
  • One year related experience and/or training working with adolescents and teenagers in the following fields: Medical, mental health, chemical dependency, education, recreational therapy

Ability and Knowledge
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with residents and staff from different cultures while performing the duties of this job.   
  • Must be willing to participate in and successfully complete all relevant advanced training to include ongoing professional development.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years old  
  • Knowledge and background in Native American culture/spiritual traditions and practices preferred.
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. Must be able to read, write, and understand English.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registration:
·        Must become CPR and First Aid certified
·        Possess a Washington Driving License free of driving restrictions.
·        Must be able to read and write proficiently in English for Documentation and Daily Reports

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to follow or lead residents on foot, walking or running as needed. 
  • Specific vision and hearing abilities required.
  • May be exposed to inclement weather.
  • May be exposed to verbally and/or physically assaultive behavior.
  • Required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases.
