Natural Resource Specialist 1 & 2 (Fish Research Biologist) Multiple Positions

Make a Difference in Oregon's Natural Resources! ODFW Mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

These positions are with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in John Day.


This recruitment is being used to fill two positions, a Natural Resource Specialist 2 ($3,743-$5,454) and Natural Resource Specialist 1 ($3,256-$4,729). These positions have the same work location and will perform similar work; however, the Natural Resource Specialist 2 will have additional statistical analysis, report writing and employee oversite responsibilities. In the supplemental questions section, you will be asked which position(s) you would like to be considered for.


What you will do:
• Under the general direction of the project leader will assist in planning, development, and implementation of studies to evaluate the escapement and productivity of spring Chinook, salmon, steelhead, and their habitats.

Both positions will participate in collection of scientific data in streams in Northeast Oregon. Use snorkeling and electrofishing techniques to assess juvenile salmon in streams throughout the John Day River basin. Measure lengths and weights of juvenile salmon. Conduct habitat surveys on anadromous fish-bearing streams to assess habitat quality of wadeable streams throughout the John Day River basin. Walk streams to estimate redd and adult steelhead numbers. Sample adult carcasses, measure length, collect scales, determine sex, and assess egg retention. Collect snouts from coded-wire-tagged fish. Operate drift boats and jet sleds on flowing water.

Both positions will enter data into computer databases such as Microsoft Access, PTAGIS, and GIS, and summarize scientific data. Develop spreadsheets, databases, and GIS models to analyze data. Tabulate, summarize and analyze data in formats suitable for written and oral presentation. Prepare reports and makes presentations for professional meetings.

In addition to the work above the Natural Resource Specialist 2 will oversee the work of up to four staff members. Develop and assess appropriate statistical methods for complex data analysis using Microsoft Access, GIS and R software. Develop experimental designs and statistical and analytical approaches. Coordinate project activities with districts, regions, federal agencies, tribal agencies and private landowners. Conduct research in support of the Oregon Plan monitoring efforts by interpreting data and identifying pattern gaps, developing hypotheses for testing using current and future data.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Natural Resource Specialist 2 Minimum Qualifications:
• Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of  biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program; OR

• One year of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR

• A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.

Natural Resource Specialist 1 Minimum Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR

• Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.
