Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Sea Lion Management Specialist)

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Clackamas.
This is a full time, Limited Duration position through December 31, 2020, with the possibility of an extension.


Make a difference for salmon survival in Oregon’s Willamette and Columbia rivers! We invite you to join our team of fisheries professionals by playing a key role in the management, monitoring, and evaluation of predation by pinnipeds on fish resources.


What you will do:
Assist with design and conduct of research and management projects. Assist program and project leaders with planning of research and management activities. Assist with capture, handling, marking, and instrumentation of pinnipeds to study distribution, movements, and foraging behavior. Assist with capture, handling, translocation, and/or removal of nuisance pinnipeds to reduce or eliminate predation on ESA-listed fish stocks. Assist with monitoring and documentation of pinniped predation events on salmonids, sturgeon, and other species of concern in the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Design and construct barriers and exclusion devices to deter pinnipeds from utilizing private/public property (e.g., docks, marinas). Deploy, operate, and maintain complex field equipment, including automated cameras, pinniped traps, pinniped marking equipment (squeeze cage, propane forge), as well as a variety of boats and travel trailers.

Assist with data management, visualization, and analysis. Use database or spreadsheet software to enter and store data. Use statistical or spreadsheet or GIS software to manage, visualize, and analyze data. Use image processing software to count and identify individual pinnipeds

Assist with writing of annual permit reports, field reports, and scientific papers. Write first drafts of annual permit and field reports. Review drafts of scientific reports and contribute to Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion sections. Review and synthesize in writing existing scientific literature on specific assigned topics

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR

Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.

Requested Skills:
• Capturing, marking, handling California and Steller sea lions
• Hazing, relocating, or handling pinnipeds for management purposes
• Collecting, entering and performing analysis on data
• Operating or managing imagery from game/trial cameras and unmanned aerial
• Processing pinniped food habits such as scat collection and/or gastrointestinal tract processing
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Working as part of an inter-agency team to meet management objectives
