Deputy Director - Teach Western Mass

The Deputy Director for Teach Western Mass will play an essential role in achieving our vision of ensuring an excellent educator in every classroom in Western Massachusetts so that all students have access to a vibrant education that will prepare them for college and career. 

As a strategic leader for Teach Western Mass, the Deputy will have the opportunity to lead implementation of the organization's strategic plan in a way that supports educational equity and has lasting impacts on the region’s human capital landscape. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Deputy will lead Teach Western Mass with the support of a diverse and talented team. 
 
The ideal candidate has experience with organizational and large-scale project management, building strong partnerships with stakeholders, forecasting needs and prioritizing funding, and proposal development.

Who We Are 
Teach Western Mass is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with local innovative district schools, charter schools, and institutions of higher education (IHEs) to bring more high-quality, diverse educators into our region’s most high-need schools. Collectively, Teach Western Mass represents 30 schools that serve more than 11,000 students in Western Massachusetts. 
 
Teach Western Mass has a three-pronged strategy designed to help us create lasting change in the quality, quantity, and diversity of teacher talent in the region (Springfield and Holyoke, MA). Our strategy focuses on: (1) collaborative recruitment efforts, (2) innovative teacher preparation programs, and (3) ensuring our current educators have access to both the growth opportunities and the support they deserve.

What We Offer 
Teach Western Mass offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $105,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits plan, covering 75% of the employee and spouse/dependent premium for the base medical plan. Other benefits include dental plan, disability, life insurance, generous vacation time, and a Simple IRA option with employer matching. We offer employees the ability to work remotely when they do not have in-person commitments. We also offer and promote an inclusive environment where staff are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work each day. 
 
What You’ll Do 
The Deputy will partner closely with the Executive Director to achieve the mission and vision of the organization. The Deputy will ensure organizational effectiveness by building and leading thriving, inclusive teams, managing budgets and finances, building and stewarding strong partnerships, planning strategically, and overseeing the codification of knowledge and data analytics to drive continuous improvement. 
 
Specific responsibilities include: 
  • Serving as the primary liaison between the Teach Western Mass Executive Director and staff 
  • Managing and developing a thriving team, maintaining a consistent bar for quality and helping staff reach their full potential 
  • Facilitating communication and collaboration across the organization to increase effectiveness and efficiency
  • Leading short-term and long-term strategic planning that is aligned to the Teach Western Mass strategic plan (https://teachwesternmass.com/strategic-plan) to facilitate attainment of operational, fiscal, and staff performance goals 
  • Supporting Teach Western Mass staff with the development of high-quality action plans that drive toward the goals outlined in the strategic plan 
  • Leading codification of knowledge and organizational learnings to build and sustain regional impact 
  • Fostering improved collection and use of organizational and client data for strategic business decisions 
  • Researching new funding opportunities, including state-level RFPs, and leading proposal development in response to these opportunities 
  • Supporting cultivation of strong partnerships with community organizations and funders across the region 
  • Overseeing the overall Teach Western Mass budget to ensure efficiency of spending and identification of where shifts in investments should be made 
  • Overseeing compliance to ensure Teach Western Mass meets all funder, government, and partner requirements 
  • Engaging in partner and board meetings when required by the Executive Director

Qualifications 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in project or operational management 
  • Experience leading thriving, inclusive teams 
  • Experience in fundraising (preferred
  • Experience in education sector (preferred
  • Must be aligned to the mission of the organization and possess a growth mindset 
  • Excellent forecasting, prioritization and planning skills, and experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders 
  • Experience managing teams to tackle complex projects or take on organizational change efforts 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment of rapidly changing priorities and tight deadlines 
  • A commitment to constant learning and improvement, in both your own work and the work of others 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
 
This position is based in Western Massachusetts, and may require some regional travel.
