Feedlot Environmental Specialist

Job Summary
As a Feedlot Environmental Specialist, you will perform compliance, enforcement, and permitting activities for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA) Feedlot Program to prevent or eliminate pollution to waters of the state. This includes educating and assisting feedlot owners to understand and comply with feedlot rules and regulations; conduct inspections of feedlots to determine compliance; initiate enforcement actions to return feedlots to compliance; and support and oversee county feedlot officers to follow process and procedures. In addition, you will have numerous opportunities to learn new skills, perform a variety of tasks, build relationships with various clientele, and work in the outdoors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must clearly demonstrate the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Conservation, Biology, Chemistry, or related field OR Two (2) years of professional-level environmental protection experience.
  • Effective writing skills to clearly convey information to a variety of internal and external parties.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word and exposure to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Ability to gain a complete understanding of the environmental regulatory process and procedures.
  • Communication and human relations skills to interact effectively with stakeholders and team members.
  • Problem-solving skills to successfully resolve technical matters and bring projects to conclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with animal-producer groups and individual feedlot producers.
  • Experience in compliance and enforcement activities.
  • Knowledge of feedlot rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of land application of manure and nutrient management.

Physical Requirements

Requires the ability to perform field work which includes traversing uneven terrain in and around animal agriculture sites, fields used for land application of manure, and natural resources such as lakes and streams, in diverse weather conditions.

Additional Requirements

A driver’s license is an essential function of this position. This requires possession of an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License. The job offer is contingent on confirmation of a valid driver’s license AND a satisfactory driver’s license record check.

Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
