Crime Specialist

 
SALARY: $4,992 - $6,018/mo.

THE POSITION
Crime Specialists perform specialized technical work utilizing crime and intelligence data; evaluates and interprets crime information; prepares and disseminates information regarding crime activity, series, trends and patterns. Incumbents create associations, detect and understand crime patterns, and develop correlations in order to assist in the aid of deployment of resources, and the apprehension of subjects. Incumbents may be assigned off-site, and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
 
One vacancy exists in the Real Time Crime Center of the Fresno Police Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months

THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.
 
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminology, criminal justice, mathematics/statistics, public administration, behavioral science, GIS, or related field; and two (2) years of professional crime and intelligence experience for a military or law enforcement agency. Applicable experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
 
Possession of a Certified Crime and Intelligence Analyst (CCIA) certificate issued by an accredited college or university and recognized by the California Department of Justice and/or a GIS Certificate of Advanced Study issued by an accredited college or university is desirable.

Eligibles certified for consideration for this position will be required to successfully pass a Department interview, polygraph exam, Department of Justice fingerprint, and an extensive background investigation prior to employment with the City of Fresno. 
 
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and a current copy of their driving record. 
 
THE SELECTION  PROCESS
The selection process may consist of the following:  
 
APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Applications which meet the minimum qualifications will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to the panel interview. Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation.
 
ORAL EXAMINATION - 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related Oral Examination which may evaluate each candidate's knowledge of principles, practices and methodologies of data analysis and crime prevention, pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinance sand safety regulations, ability to identify and distinguish crime patterns and trends, interpret and explain City and department policies, procedures, rules and regulation; establish and maintain effective working relationships; or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Crime Specialist. 
 
The performance examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week of: February 24, 2020.
 
Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Oral Examination to qualify for placement on the eligible list. 
 
VETERAN’S PREFERENCE
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
