Division Forester

As a Division Forester, you will provide supervision with direct financial and regulatory compliance responsibility for all timber procurement activities supplying our Cowlitz area lumber mills in Morton and Randle, Washington. This position will be based out of Chehalis, Washington. The work area will be in Washington as well as Oregon. This is a full time position offering competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the purchase of open market logs and contract timber in coordination with fee timberland log supply to meet the species and desired profile demand of the Cowlitz sawmills
  • Work closely with the Log Procurement manager and Resources Division acquisition staff to develop and execute log procurement and allocation strategy to Hampton mills and external customer locations
  • Contribute to the achievement of the Corporate and Resources Division Hampton Continuous Improvement Plan (Lean Processes creation and management) initiative objectives including financial and operational metrics, vendor and contractor performance, log measurement and inventory
  • Work in close communication and collaboration with the Cowlitz mill management teams
  • Represent Hampton and advocate for forest industry practices and policies in a proactive and positive manner with contractors, neighbors, public agencies and the industry partners
  • Mentor foresters that report to you and develop their capabilities and skills that contribute to their personal and professional success
  • Ensuring safe working conditions with active participation in company safety programs, ensuring that all activities are conducted in full compliance with laws, regulations and policy, collaboration with operations staff to ensure company objectives are achieved
  • Overseeing the hiring for resource positions dependent on business need to support the timber acquisition for the Cowlitz sawmills
  • Approach responsibilities of employment with enthusiasm while working with other teams and departments focusing on the Hampton Core Values; Safety, People, Ethics, Candor, Execution and Innovation
 
Skills and Attributes:
  • Excellent PC skills using Microsoft products (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Knowledge of Pacific northwest log procurement, and timber cruising and appraisal
  • Proven customer service skills, negotiation skills, and related verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain high personal and professional standards of focus, attention to detail, and dedication to work
  • Self-starter with the ability to develop their own agenda to work with multiple internal customers and team members from varied levels and functional backgrounds
  • Strong work ethic, sense of commitment, team-oriented, and willingness to embrace change while striving for continuous improvement
  • Assertive and responsible, while exemplifying the highest level of ethics, honesty and integrity

Education: This position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Forestry, or a related natural resources field, and at least 10 years of log procurement, timber cruising and appraisal, forestry and lumber manufacturing experience. 
 
Work Conditions: The work setting will consist of both field work and office work. This position can be physically demanding at times and requires the ability to traverse steep slopes in a wide range of adverse weather and field conditions.
