Oceanographic Instrumentation Technician

Job Summary / Primary Responsibility: The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission assists four tribes in the co-management of their treaty rights within the Columbia River Basin. The position offered is associated with the Commission’s Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP) department. This position contributes to all aspects of the design, construction, calibration, repair, installation and deployment of estuary and ocean observation stations, buoys, gliders and cruises. The Oceanographic Instrumentation Technician will be responsible for the collection of oceanic and marine atmospheric observations. This position will collect reliable, quality data using in-situ ocean observing instrumentation to meet user needs for government, industry, academia, and the public.
 
Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Assistance in preparation, deployment and recovery of ocean gliders.
  • Assist in glider piloting operations during deployments.
  • Support the deployment and recovery of oceanographic platforms.
  • Actively assist in maintaining the data and instrumentation network.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the preparation of oceanographic instrumentation.
  • Deploy and recovery of data platforms and associated instrumentation.
  • Maintain comprehensive notes and records.
  • Communicate activities and progress internally.
  • Able to coordinate operations in a safe manner and assess risk in the work environment prior and during operations.

Job Requirements / Qualifications:
We are seeking responsible and dependable individuals in marine science, oceanography or engineering who meet the following required qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 5 years relevant work experience in marine science, oceanography, engineering or a related field. A Master of Science/Engineering degree or a related field will substitute for work experience.
  • Able to plan, communicate and conduct oceanographic operations.
  • Verbal, written, and computer communication skills.
  • Instrumentation trouble shooting skills.
  • Understanding of Computer, Programming and Data analysis skills.
  • Practical skills operating motor vehicles, small vessels, forklift trucks, winches, cranes, machine tools, hand tools, and other equipment as needed.

Supervision Received: This position reports to the CMOP Program Coordinator.

Supervision Given: None

Working Conditions: Physically able to lift, bend, and reach for equipment in awkward and difficult estuarine and oceanographic conditions.

CRITFC Motor Vehicle Policy:
The driver operating a CRITFC vehicle or their own private vehicle for business related purposes shall be in possession of a valid, unrestricted current driver’s license, or other operator’s license, as required by law; and be eligible for coverage under CRITFC’s Motor Vehicle insurance policy. Upon request, CRITFC’s Motor Vehicle policy is available to applicants to review the required criteria.
