Fish Pathologist

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) is currently recruiting for a Fish Pathologist at our Eagle Fish Health Laboratory (EFHL) in Eagle, Idaho.
Please Note:The ideal candidate will possess a master's degree and three years of fish health experience, or have training in veterinary medicine and/or possession of a doctorate of veterinary medicine. The successful candidate selected will be expected to acquire certification from the American Fisheries Society's Fish Health Section as Certified Aquatic Animal Health Inspector or Certified Fishery Pathologist within their six month probation period and maintain certification throughout the duration of their employment with the department.
General Information:
- This announcement will be used to fill the current opening for Fish Pathologist. If you have previously applied for the position of Fish Pathologist and you wish to be considered for the current opening, you must reapply under this announcement. Previous scores will not be used.
Responsibilities:
- Necropsy fish and collect tissue samples according to standard methods for routine surveillance testing/inspections and for diagnostic purposes.
- Coordinate with microbiology staff regarding pathogen testing and interpretation of results.
- Facilitate reporting of final results to hatchery staff and archival in EFHL database.
- Prepare and provide content as needed for reporting and other administrative purposes.
- Conduct annual biosecurity audits in support of fish health management and aquatic invasive species control and maintain Fish Health Improvement Plans for IDFG-operated hatcheries.
- Coordinate with veterinary personnel and/or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service/Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program to access aquaculture drugs and ensure legal and judicious use at IDFG-operated hatcheries.
- Design and conduct research to address fish health concerns at IDFG-operated hatcheries, improve understanding and methods of fish health management, and advance the field of fisheries science.
- Represent the EFHL and IDFG in professional forums related to fish health, including internal and external meetings/conferences, working groups, etc.
- In cooperation with the State Veterinarian's Office (Idaho State Dept. of Agriculture), to oversee the Live Fish Import/Transport/Release permitting process for IDFG, other government agencies, commercial, and private interests.
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.)
- Good knowledge of: drugs and their recommended use and dosage levels for control of fish disease.
- Some knowledge of: fish cultural practices; nutritional requirements of fish and ingredients used in fish diets; water quality sampling and analysis techniques.
- Experience: use of standard methods in identifying infectious agents and other causes of morbidity/mortality in fish; preventing and treating fish diseases.

Salary:
$23.49 - $31.32 per hour DOE, Plus Competitive Benefits!
