The role: 
We are recruiting for a senior structure coatings engineer to monitor the statewide structure painting program. In this role, you will advise, assist and coordinate between the Construction Section, Bridge Section, agency regions and consultants to provide efficient communication, change analysis and field interpretations of contract requirements. Key focuses of this position include:
  • Evaluate the existing condition of coating systems.
  • Prioritize and select projects.
  • Develop and update standard specifications.
  • Review project plans and specifications.
  • Provide statewide uniformity in coating and inspection procedures and practices.
  • Provide paint inspector training to state and local agency personnel.

A day in the life:
  • Determine solutions for problems encountered while painting bridges or other structures.
  • Discuss with and advise contractors, manufacturers, and government agencies on structure coating procedures, specifications and practices.
  • Provide expert coating inspection instruction and support to inspectors and other field personnel.
  • Visit structure coating construction project sites to be aware of construction processes and issues.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with field construction personnel and contractors.
  • Review and inspect structure coating projects for compliance.
  • Recommend improvements to coating designs, specifications, materials and construction practices.
  • Train field personnel in structure coating project inspection techniques.
  • Provide technical expertise on the constructability of structure coating projects.
  • Review construction plans and specifications prior to advertisement.
  • Update standard specifications for the preparation and coating of steel, concrete, timber and other substrate materials.
  • Prioritize, schedule and prepare estimates for structure painting contracts statewide.
  • This position primarily works outdoors, including in inclement weather.
  • Field work requires frequent climbing on steel structures and working at construction sites, on high structures above the ground or water using proper fall protection precautions, and around heavy construction equipment.
  • Extensive statewide travel and overtime, including weekends if necessary, to and from construction sites.
  • Must work around hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste generated by coating operations.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering and three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in the state of Oregon within six (6) months of hire.

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
 
What we’d like to see:
  • Knowledge and experience with respect to NACE or Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) certification programs.
  • Knowledge and experience related to lead paint mitigation with technologies and practices related to it.
  • Knowledge and experience with structure coatings with respect to shop and field applied systems.
