Field Operations Staff (Seed Production)
A growing, Vegetable/Flower/Herb Seed Production company is seeking candidates for a Field Operations staff position for Seed Production in the Treasure Valley.
Daily responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with seed (farmer)/growers
- Place contracts for seed production of annual/biennial crops as organic/conventional open-pollinated/hybrid: turnips, mustards, kales, radishes, carrots, lettuces, onions, herbs, flowers
- Manage crops from planting by seed to a mature, high-quality seed product, indicated by varietal integrity, hybridity, germination and purity
- Keep detailed field status reports: log key production metrics, potential problems, anticipated yields
- Problem solve, anticipate and take action to avoid crop issues with irrigation, pest, weed, disease
- Organize roguing for perfection, keep varietal integrity by advising roguing crews which off-type plants to remove from production fields
- Oversee harvest, coordinate combine clean out, set combines, manage and communicate timing for delivery to seed mill
Successful candidate should have enthusiasm about raising seed crops and will receive training on the job by our Field Production Manager
Experience/education with an emphasis in Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Agricultural Business/Science/System Management, and familiarity with crop production/protection tools and techniques, agricultural chemistries are positives
For a motivated individual with attention to detail and problem solving ability this is a long-term position with potential for growth and advancement
This role has a dimension of the seasonal demands of agricultural production: non-traditional business hours (early starts), a degree of autonomy, but also the requirement to do what is necessary promptly when the window of opportunity is open
