MECHANICAL ENGINEER/ELECTRO-OPTICS DESIGN

MECHANICAL ENGINEER - ELECTRO-OPTICS DESIGN: This position will be involved in the detailed design, development, and testing of next-generation riflescopes and accessories for Mil-Spec and Commercial applications.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related degree, required
  • 5+ years of design experience in electro-mechanical systems, preferred
  • 5+ years of experience designing mechanical housings, fixtures, etc. for holding and covering PCBs and optical elements, preferred
  • Sound literacy in 3D and 2D CAD (ideally Autodesk Inventor)
  • Must have a good working knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Must have industry experience interacting with EE team to optimize PCB geometry and layout to satisfy mechanical limitations
  • Must have experience with rapid prototyping using additive manufacturing, COTS components, dev kits
  • Must have experience with mechanical systems requiring precise alignment
  • Experience in the following areas would be considered a plus:
  • Sourcing domestic and overseas vendors for custom components
  • Designing for IP-68 or MIL-STD 810-G
  • Working with optical prescription and imaging optics
  • Working with non-imaging illumination systems
  • Working with microdisplays including LCOS, OLED, uLED, etc.
  • Working knowledge of injection molding small, complex parts including mold limitations and material selection is a plus
  • Knowledge of optical component mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bonding is a plus
  • Knowledge of sensors including CMOS, CCD, microbolometer, etc. is a plus
  • Knowledge in AR/VR/MR industries is a plus
  • Ability to use hand tools and work with small optical, mechanical, and electrical components
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to keep accurate records
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Must have a positive attitude and be highly motivated
  • Must have high regard for confidentiality

Core Accountabilities:
As a member of the Electro-Optics team, this position will have an active role in the entire design process from generating and evaluating product ideas, through detailed research and prototype testing, to final production release. Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Design mechanical housings including optical fixtures, PCB mounts, plastic covers
  • Generate all relevant 2D/3D models and drawings
  • Work with the on-site machine shop and external vendors to source required components for initial prototype units
  • Involved in assembly and testing of first units to validate the design and confirm performance expectations
  • Product testing including live gunfire and in-field usage
