Overview

Under general direction, the Laboratory Animal Sciences Technician 4 will perform a variety of routine and non-routine tasks following established techniques and procedures. The Technician will assist in study execution; collect samples from and administers agents to research animals as IACUC approved studies require. Actively participates in the refinement of existing techniques and procedures and development and implementation of new procedures, including authorship of applicable SOPs and coordination of necessary training. Will exercise judgment in the collection and processing of samples such as blood, serum, plasma, tissue and urine. Works with a variety of animal species, possesses unique and sophisticated technical skills and work assignments are complex. Tasks will involve both in-vivo and in-vitro procedures.
Documents laboratory work to acceptable standards and maintains laboratory/medical equipment and supplies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), protocols and regulations. The successful candidate will assist in administrative functions of study execution such as labeling collection tubes and transporting supplies to appropriate area, quality control review of data, coordinating sample shipment, and acting as study lead or coordinator. Activities as lead may include scheduling team work assignments, acting as primary point of contact for the study director for a study, and developing forms to capture data points required by the study protocol. Activities as a study coordinator including demonstrating the capability to manage all aspects of the in-life portion of the study and to provide real-time update to the study director.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 3+ years of experience in a research environment or equivalent combination of education & experience to equal minimum 8 years’ animal science experience. Must have a minimum of 3 years of animal experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.
Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.
 
Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and other heavy equipment, pushing, bending, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, outdoor work, working in extremes temperature and humidity. Must be able to wear a respirator and protective clothing or equipment. A Post-offer physical and background check/security clearance are required. Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB) is required.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

Master’s Degree in a scientific field and leadership experience in a related field preferred.
 
ALAT level, LAT level and LATG certification is preferred. Incumbent is encouraged to sit for ALAT and/or LAT within 6 months of becoming eligible. LAT and/or LATG within the first 24 months as a level 4 technician is encouraged.
