Nutritional Sciences and Exercise Physiology Fellow

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), Military Nutrition Division (MND) is offering a master's level internship at the Natick, Massachusetts facility.

 

As an ORISE participant, you will be collaborating on ongoing studies within the MND focusing on the integrative effects of diet composition and exercise on substrate oxidation and performance. You will participate in the execution of randomized controlled trials that examine impact of nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, and pharmacological interventions for Warfighters exposed to military operational stress. During your appointment you will receive hands-on experience collecting data from exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, stable isotope methodologies, and biological samples. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain a multitude of experiences to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas including, but are not limited to, you will receive experience analyzing and interpreting data for presentation and publication.

The USARIEM is ready to make appointments effective May 10, 2021. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

This is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for up to four additional years, depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

You will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Candidates should have or be currently pursuing a MS degree in the nutritional sciences, exercise physiology, or a closely related field. Demonstrated proficiency with written and oral communication, and exemplary organizational skills. Experience with collecting data related to nutrition- and exercise-based interventions with human populations preferred.
