What you will do
The duties of the Property Tax Specialist include:
  • auditing counties in property tax assessment and valuation in the areas of residential, commercial, and agriculture;
  • ensuring property taxes are administered fairly, uniformly, and accurately throughout the state;
  • working closely with key stakeholders - Elected County Officials, Directors of Equalization, etc;
  • interacting with South Dakota State University researchers regarding the agricultural land assessment system;
  • reviewing, verifying, and approving various reports and processes
What you need
Education/Licenses:
  • Certified Appraiser or be willing to become certified within one year of date of hire. The Department of Revenue provides all necessary training to gain certification.
Our ideal candidate has:
  • an associates degree or higher in business/accounting or an equivalent 3-5 years office experience;
  • 3-5 years of education and experience in property assessment and taxation is preferable;
  • knowledge and experience of property tax statutes and administrative rules;
  • knowledge of property assessment and taxation methodology, implementation, and policy including agriculture land productivity system.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • effective verbal and written communication skills including public speaking;
  • ability to build and maintain strong relationships within and outside of the department;
  • ability to embrace organizational culture change;
  • advanced use of the Microsoft Office Suite software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Sharepoint, Access, Learning Management System, PowerPoint);
  • ability to use critical thinking to solve issues as they occur and decide on correct course of action for rectification.
