Traffic Management Center Engineer | Transportation Engineer 2 (In-Training)

The Opportunity
WSDOT Northwest Region Traffic Management Center (TMC) has a unique and exciting engineering opportunity to provide daily traffic management activities as the TMC Engineer. In this position you will guide operations and make decisions on a daily basis that directly impact driver safety and traffic flow. Duties and responsibilities include operating the Region's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), guiding and assisting staff on the use of these systems, and coordinating system activation around major events that impact WSDOT roadways. The candidate selected for this position will also work to support traffic analysis and data requests for the region Traffic Office and assists in producing engineering studies and reports for others including news media as needed. The successful candidate will possess the ability to be available to work a variety of shifts to include day, swing, night, weekends, and holidays, sometimes with little notice to assist in the 24/7 operations of the TMC.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the TMC Engineer will:
  • Monitor daily operations in the TMC using the state of the art incident management systems and principles.
  • Utilize ITS and managed facilities in response to an incident's impact to the roadway network.
  • Use engineering judgment; response protocols; and coordinate with management; local agencies; transit; and field crews.
  • Respond to internal and external customers; retrieve, analyze, and report on traffic data; reply to constituent feedback and requests.
  • Operate ramp meter system, variable message signs (VMS), Active Traffic Management (ATM) and monitor PC and CCTV displays.
  • Control and manage traffic flow around incident scene by deploying appropriate ITS devices.
  • Coordinate incident management efforts with Radio Communication, field IRT, and local agencies.
  • Communicate with the public and support groups.
 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
 
In addition to:
  • Working knowledge of freeway management practices and principles.
  • Strong analytical skills; working knowledge of data collection, analysis, and reporting practices and principles.
  • Ability to comprehend and verify contract plans.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call outs within one hour, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform standby duty on a rotational basis.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a major metropolitan transportation operations center
  • Experience with Excel and large data sets
  • Coordination and communication with teams and the public
  • Operation of mission critical software suites

  • These in-training positions offer a career path and on-the-job training, and allow you to progress through the Transportation Engineer field, achieving the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 depending on qualifications. The salary levels for each are:
  • Transportation Engineer 1: $58,300 - $78,334
  • Transportation Engineer 2: $64,285 – $86,461
