Research and Design Intern

About the Position 

Libraries Without Borders (LWB US) is looking for hardworking, resourceful, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals to join our team as Research and Design Interns. If you’re interested in user research, data, and human-centered design to promote digital equity and community empowerment, we welcome you to apply. 

Research and Design interns will support the Director of Education/Deputy Director by designing research that strengthens and improves user experiences across LWB US’s existing programs, and drives the development of new projects aligned with the organization’s mission. We are looking for individuals familiar with qualitative and quantitative research methods who can leverage their findings to inform design decisions. The right candidates will be excellent communicators who are hungry to learn and passionate about expanding access to information and education to those who need it most, particularly individuals living on the margins of society. 

A willingness to learn and ingenuity are far more important than prior experience in the field. Our ideal candidate would work part time or commit to 20-25 hours/week for 15 weeks to ensure you gain a practical understanding of the organization and develop the skills needed to carry out this work beyond your internship.

What You Need to Succeed 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential opportunities, and recommend solutions
  • Ability to present complex qualitative and quantitative data to diverse audiences in an understandable format via excellent verbal and written and/or visual communication skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to learn quickly
  • Extraordinary critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and willingness to collaborate with others 
  • Ability to think quickly, resolve problems, and multi-task across numerous projects and teams
  • Ability to “roll with the punches,” as in remaining calm in the midst of evolving, sometimes unpredictable timeframes and priorities
  • Ability to translate insights into workable prototypes for testing and future iteration

Nice to Have, But Not Required

  • Experience applying quantitative and qualitative research methods in a nonprofit setting 
  • Prior experience with UX/UI and human-centered design, applied research, and or research and development 
  • Familiarity with usability studies, heuristic evaluations, interviews, surveys, user personas, journey maps, service blueprints and benchmarking

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with team members to generate design solutions that are research-driven and advance the mission of LWB US
  • Assist with the design, running, and analysis of research studies and user testing
  • Iteratively design and test prototypes of tools and training opportunities geared to connect people to critical information and serv ices 
  • Design and conduct user research and communicate findings with LWB US team to improve programs and streamline processes 
  • Produce and present high-fidelity mock-ups of final designs
  • Assist with questions of information architecture internally and across LWB US’s programs 
  • Support the refinement of the Wash and Learn (WALI) Community Toolkit, a step-by-step guide for individuals interested in bringing this program to their communities, as well as continuously improving upon the health literacy component of this toolkit 
  • Promote tools and training materials to public audiences through reports, webinars, virtual conferences, working groups, and other communities of practice
