Remote Clinical Research Internship - Academic Year 2021-22 - NKI-Rockland Sample Research Program (NKI-RS)

Applications are currently being accepted for a 2021-22 academic year Clinical Research Internship to work remotely supporting the NKI-Rockland Sample Research Program (NKI-RS) at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) in Orangeburg, NY. The NKI fosters a collaborative environment where interns have the opportunity to gain excellent clinical and research experience.

The NKI-RS is a large-scale (n>1,300), open-science research program focused on understanding brain maturation and brain health, and mental health relationships across the lifespan utilizing innovative MRI- and EEG-based imaging approaches and in-depth clinical research assessments. Additionally, the NKI-RS is an open-science data resource for researchers worldwide and contributes to open data-sharing initiatives, such as the 1000 Functional Connectomes Project and the International Neuroimaging Data-sharing Initiative. http://fcon_1000.projects.nitrc.org/indi/enhanced/

Under the supervision of study staff, intern responsibilities for the current study in this research program include remote participant screening for the study’s enrollment criteria, scheduling participants, and supporting remote data collection measuring a variety of dimensions including mood, sleep, cognition, and lifestyle health factors. We provide an excellent learning experience and stepping stone for highly motivated candidates who plan to pursue graduate programs in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, medicine, or public health fields.

NKI internships are unpaid; however, we are committed to supporting efforts to secure funding through university scholarships or other sources. We will also collaborate with your university for course credits, if applicable.

The internship requires a minimum of 16 hours per week for the academic year 2021-22, with some availability during standard workdays Eastern time for meetings with the team. Considering the projects involved and the level of training required, preference is given to applicants who can make a commitment of a full academic year with the potential to maintain or increase hours over academic breaks. Other arrangements are possible on a case-by-case basis.

Qualifications: The ideal applicant is likely to be pursuing a B.S. or B.A. in psychology, neuroscience, biology, social work, or related scientific fields. Excellent communication skills are necessary.  Prior research experience is a plus but is not required.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please submit all applications through Handshake. Your application is unlikely to receive full consideration unless you include all the requested information.

Send a resume (which includes GPA) and a cover letter describing how your prior experience, skill sets, and future career goals are a good match for the internship. Please also discuss perceived gaps in your current training that this experience will fill in. For example, you may not have had an opportunity to work directly with participants or you may want to expand your experience working with different age groups or a community sample. Please highlight how you hope to develop those areas through this internship and how the internship will advance your progress towards your specific goals. Please also include your preferred start and end dates, any planned break periods, and days and hours per week available for the internship.

Contact information: We prefer to be contacted through Handshake or at Applications@nki.rfmh.org. Please do not attempt to contact us through the Nathan Kline Institute website.

Check with your Internship Coordinator BEFORE accepting to determine how you might do this internship for credit.
