Restoration Engineer

Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) has an opening for a full-time mid-level River Restoration Engineer in the Pacific Northwest (Moscow, ID office). CFS is a fisheries research and restoration consulting firm that serves clients throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Our mission is to rigorously apply the scientific method to afford our clients innovative, scientifically robust solutions to address a variety of fisheries and environmental challenges. The CFS team achieves this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications and publication of results in scientific journals.
The position of Restoration Engineer supports multiple habitat restoration design projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. We are looking for a unique candidate whose experience spans hydrology and hydraulics, geomorphology, and engineering applications for restoration design development, using standard and emerging techniques. We focus on applied science and a process-based "fish first" approach to restoration assessments and designs that seamlessly merge fish ecology, fluvial geomorphology, landscape processes, and engineering design. Potential candidates must share our approach and restoration design philosophy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Development of analytical methods and calculations to determine various components of engineering design.
  • Preparation of engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimations, and bid documents.
  • Design of restoration projects for salmonids including floodplain, instream, barrier removal, and other common techniques.
  • Co-manage several projects and serve as the Project/Engineering Task Lead.
  • Contribute to project procurement through development of proposals and budgets and fostering relationships with clients.

Required Critical Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Civil and environmental engineering: Individual must have experience in construction plan set preparation and preparation of cost estimates, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Fluvial geomorphology: Individual must have an understanding ofthe interactions between the physical shapes of rivers, their water and sediment transport processes, and the landforms they create.
  • Hydraulic modeling: The selected candidate must have experience and expertise in hydraulic modeling (HEC models, other 1-D and/or 2D models).
  • Technical abilities: The selected individual must have general experience in AutoCAD, Civil3D, ArcGIS, QGIS, R or Python programming, with a strong desire to learn more.
  • Restoration and habitat enhancement: Individual should possess knowledge of and experience with the scientific method and fisheries restoration science. The individual must have experience completing designs for floodplain and instream enhancement, and barrier removal projects to improve habitat for Pacific salmon and trout or similar species.
  • Fish ecology: The individual must have knowledge of Pacific salmon and trout habitat requirements.
  • Data collection: The selected candidate must have demonstrated skills in data collection, management, and analysis, with experience collecting data and doing fieldwork specifically needed to support hydraulic analyses and engineering design.
  • Project management skills: The individual must have the ability to co-manage several projects and serve as the Project/Engineering Task Lead. The individual must have the ability to track project budgets and complete all required products and reports.
  • Project procurement: Individual should have experience and an understanding of project proposal and budget development.
  • Regulatory permitting: Selected candidate should have experience and an understanding of analyses and products needed to meet the requirements of local, state, and federal permits for project implementation.
  • Science-business balance: This individual should demonstrate expertise and be passionate about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems. The individual should have an understanding of business functions to help manage CFS as a profitable business.
  • Technical writing: The individual must possess strong technical writing skills.
  • Construction plans – The candidate should have experience developing construction plan sets and costs estimates.

Education/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Licensed Professional Civil Engineer in Washington and/or Oregon
  • S. in Civil/Water Resources/Environmental Engineering or closely related field with 5-7 years of experience in water resources consulting or a related applied engineering field; or M.S. degree with 2 or more years of professional experience

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Must be comfortable working in the aquatic environment including working from a boat platform, and swimming and wading in rivers, streams, and lakes
  • Must be able to work effectively and drive safely in inclement weather including hot, cold, rain and fog conditions
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Possible long periods of computerized data analysis in an office environment
  • Irregular hours (occasionally including weekends and evenings) and travel to remote areas for 2-3 days at a time
