Audit/Accounting Intern

The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has an exciting new opportunity for a part-time Audit/Accounting Intern in Boise. The Commission regulates investor-owned or privately-owned utilities that provide gas, water, electricity, or some telephone services for profit. 

This is a part-time opportunity (15-19 hours weekly) with a flexible schedule to give the selected candidate the ability to get on-the-job experience while finishing their degree. 

This is a non-benefitted, temporary position (the duration of this internship is to be determined/negotiated) and is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission.

This position will assist in performing a variety of professional financial duties requiring application of accounting, auditing, and financial analysis of public utility companies; defining issues in utility rate and regulatory proceedings; conducting audits of financial records and utility operations; performing related work as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Accounting/financial analysis:
Assists in examining and analyzing accounting and financial documents on revenue requirement and rate of return; assists in determining validity of investment and expenses used in ratemaking and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, ratemaking theory, regulations, and orders of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC); assists in reviewing management and business practices to determine financial stability and cost efficiency; assists in preparing pro forma financial statements.

Auditing:
Assists in conducting financial and performance audits; verifying revenues, expenses, rate base, and capital structure to determine financial condition and/or reasonableness and validity of applicant requests; assists in audit reports and discussions with team the actions to be taken to correct deficiencies.

Special investigations:
Assists in investigations regarding service, compliance with tariffs, and accounting and financial matters; assists in reviewing utility practices for compliance with utility and/or PUC policies and develops reports of findings. Reviews utility practices for compliance with utility and/or Commission policies; assists in developing reports of findings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be a Junior or Senior from an accredited university majoring in Accounting or Finance and completed the following courses: Intermediate Accounting, Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, and Business Communication. 

Preferred candidates will have completed Financial Statement Auditing.
