Interpretive Internship - Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park, located in northwest Montana, is hiring seasonal interpretive interns to present a diverse collection of formal interpretive programs (e.g., guided hikes, boat tours, interpretive talks) on the park's natural and cultural history. Interpretive interns will also conduct informal interpretation in visitor centers and field settings. Most positions run from late May to early September. Application deadline is February 13, 2022.

Glacier National Park protects and preserves a diverse and striking landscape teeming with life. The Division of Interpretation offers internships in both the West Lakes District (west side) and Hudson Bay District (east side) from late May to early September. The intern’s primary responsibilities include interpreting park resources for the visiting public through a wide range of interpretive programs (e.g., guided hikes, boat tours, talks), assisting with visitor center operations, conducting roving interpretation, and completing assigned projects related to interpretation. Interns will receive 80 hours of formal training in interpretive skills, bear and wildlife safety, natural and cultural resource information, and in related areas. This training will be combined with other professional development opportunities tailored to align with the incumbent’s experience and goals. College credit may be available for current students.

• Season: 14-16 weeks (extensions possible); beginning late May (ending dates may be flexible)

• Work Schedule: 40 hours per week 

• Housing: Shared housing provided by the park

• Wage: $200 weekly stipend, $350 to offset travel costs

• Uniform: Provided by the park

• Proficiency in public speaking and personal communication

• Knowledge of natural history, geology, biology, history, interpretation, or related fields

• Positive and professional approach to the position

• Ability to stand for long periods of time

• Knowledge and experience using computers and related software

• Valid driver's license

• Current first aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to secure certification prior to start date)

• Coursework in the natural sciences, history, education, interpretation, or related fields

• Experience teaching biology, geology, natural science, history, education, or related fields

• Experience interacting with the general public and children
