Coding it Forward is empowering the next generation of technology leaders to innovate at the intersections of technology and public service in local, state, and federal government offices across the United States.
Fellows work across software engineering, data, design, and product management to deliver policy, improve systems, and strengthen products on behalf of the American people.
The Civic Digital Fellowship is a first-of-its-kind model that empowers early-career technologists to explore careers in public service through a 10-week internship. Over 300 Fellows have served at 12 federal agencies since our launch at the U.S. Census Bureau in 2017.
Recognizing the importance of empowering talent to serve at all levels of government, we launched the Civic Innovation Corps in 2021 to create opportunities for early-career technologists to serve with their skills in local and state governments across the country. This past summer, 55 Corps Fellows served at 19 host offices across six cities and three states.
Fellows in both programs have the opportunity to:
- Make a difference and develop solutions in service of their fellow Americans
- Gain a deeper understanding of the public interest technology ecosystem
- Grow personally and professionally with a cohort of mission-driven peers
Design Fellows will work in one of the following roles:
- Graphic/Visual Design
- UX/UI Design
- User Research
2022 Dates and Location
Our 2022 programs will take place for 10 weeks—from June 13 until August 20, 2022. Our host office partners will remain primarily remote due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the exception of Department of Defense agencies. Depending on the public health situation, there may be an opportunity to gather in person.
Eligibility
Financial Details
The hourly wage for undergraduates starts at $15 (~$6,000 for 10 weeks) and for graduate students starts at $17.50 (~$7,000 for 10 weeks). Fellows working in-person will also receive housing. Additional financial assistance is available, beginning at $1,500, to those with demonstrated need.
