THE POSITION:
East Bay Regional Park District is a system of beautiful parklands and trails in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the east of San Francisco. Established in 1934, the Park District is the oldest and largest regional park system in the United States, managing over 125,000 acres of parkland within 73 regional parks, and encompassing over 1,300 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and nature learning.

Vacancy Situation: The Park District currently has two (2) vacancies located at the Tidewater Boating Center in Oakland, CA. The hiring pools established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any additional vacancies that may occur during the one year life of the hiring pools.

What You'll Be Doing: As the Recreation Coordinator, you will coordinate and implement the Recreation Department's day-camp program by collaborating across teams and departments to plan recreation programs, and facilitate the delivery of a wide variety of programming, including boating, fishing, bicycling and other outdoor activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. 
 
• Organizes and implements special events, fee classes and recreation programs;
• Conducts market research and fee structure analysis;
• Researches, recommends and contacts potential instructors, service providers and participants;
• Provides contract management oversight;
• Monitors the budget including authorizing expense reports and purchases;
• Coordinates marketing and promotional efforts;
• Publicizes recreation services through a variety of media;
• Supervises a small number of regular staff as well as temporary and seasonal employees;
• Facilitates the delivery of recreation programs with a variety of as needed services, such as: procures program materials and supplies, staff training, responds to inquiries, registers participants, collects fees, and performs hands-on service delivery tasks;
• Prepares narrative and statistical reports, analysis and recommendations;
• Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, with major work in Recreation, Park Management, Public or Business Administration, or closely related area; 

AND

Experience: One year of recent experience in recreation program planning or delivery. Supervisory experience is highly desirable.

Substitution: One additional year of appropriate work experience may be substituted for one year of the required college education. Bachelor's degrees not related may be corrected by completion of twelve or more semester units of Recreation-specific course work;

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Knowledge of:
• The parks and recreation field, with particular emphasis on outdoor recreation and contracted classes;
• Effective verbal and written communication skills;
• Recreation program design and development.

Ability to: 
• Market and promote a wide variety of programs to diverse populations;
• Establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal and external customers.

Conditions of Employment:
• A valid California driver's license is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification;
• Current certification in First Aid and CPR are conditions of initial and continued employment in this classification;
• May be required to work unusual hours, weekends and holidays;
• May be required to wear a District uniform;
• The individual chosen for hire must be able to pass a Level 1 background check, which includes: employment history verification, employment reference check, education or certificate verification, Department of Justice fingerprinting and criminal history review.
• All East Bay Park Regional District employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. 
 
Union Affiliation: East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in an agreement between the Park District and Local 2428. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.

Salary Range: The starting salary for this vacancy will be at Step A of the salary range.
