Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Student Life and Leadership, the Director of Student Engagement is responsible for supervising staff and managing the resources and services of the Office of Student Engagement. The Director ensures opportunities for student involvement, engagement and leadership development activities, builds campus community that supports equity, inclusion and social justice; and creates campus life programs that support the college's academic mission.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Annual Salary Range: $87,469 - $126,878

Annual salary will be commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

About the Department

The Office of Student Engagement provides an array of services to student organizations and to the student body of Bellevue College. Our staff plan and host Student Engagement events and activities for all BC students. We also support Chartered Student Organizations, Student Affinity Coordinators, Associated Student Government, Campus Activities Board, the Watchdog student newspaper, the Bulldog Food Pantry (in conjunction with the Benefits Hub), the Student Business Center, and more.

Essential Functions

Organizational Strategy

• Provide leadership to and oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive portfolio of student involvement and leadership opportunities and activities
• Use student development theory, assessment, data analysis and national best practices to guide operational philosophies, practices, decision making and strategic planning
• Work collaboratively with staff to develop comprehensive student experience
• Develop, implement and evaluate yearly department goals and learning outcomes
• Implement institutional, state and federal polices and regulations as they apply to the department
• Ensure department protocols are up to date and align with institutional policies and procedures as well as national best practices
• Perform program evaluations and other assessment techniques to respond to needs of students and the campus community
• Serve as subject matter expert and consult with college departments, as needed

Resource and Human Capital Management

• Manage and oversee the day-to-day operation of the Office of Student Engagement full-time and part-time professional staff and student employees
• Recruit, select, train, coach, support and evaluate direct report staff
• Coach direct reports on the proper completion of performance reviews and ensure annual performance reviews for all staff are completed and submitted in a timely manner
• Accountable for the development and continuity of Associated Student Government (ASG) training, directing, advising and guiding students leaders
• Administrative oversight, accountability and budgetary authority for the development and monitoring of annual Services and Activities Fee Budget and Associated Students self-assessed fees and budgets; Manage, develop, plan, and monitor Student Engagement budgets and expenditures assure compliance with college policies and other administrative procedures; Manage and support the S&A (Services and Activities) Budget Development Process to ensure compliance with financial code and applicable state RCW's and guidelines to assure a balanced program of S&A funded services and activities
• Establish a positive environment that supports pluralism, equity, inclusion, social justice, innovation, teamwork and successful student outcomes
• Resolve employee relations issues, and consult with Human Resources on correct corrective action procedures
• Delegate tasks to supervisees as appropriate
• Use critical thinking and diplomacy to solve complex problems

Communication and Collaboration

• Collaborate with college and community stakeholders to implement college/departmental student success processes and communicate effectively
• Collaborate with and maintain positive relationships with campus departments that impact daily housing experience for students (Events, Campus Operations, Food Service, Housing, Office of International Education, Multicultural Student Services, etc.)
• Serve on Student Life Emergency Response Duty schedule
• Facilitate shared problem solving and decision making
• Disseminate and support college policies and procedures
• Build and support networks and partnerships between students, faculty, staff and administration
• Listen actively to understand, analyze and engage others
• Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and administration
• Develop and maintain department marketing material/website that clearly communicates the department's functions, protocols and goals
• Serve on campus committees as appointed by the Dean of Student Life and Leadership.
• Advise student groups and processes as necessary
• Conduct educational workshops, trainings, presentations and other campus outreach as needed
• Prepare written reports as necessary

Leadership and Professionalism

• Create a vision for the department that aligns with the division and college goals
• Value and promote equity, pluralism, inclusion and academic excellence
• Support a student-centered environment
• Promote high standards of personal, organizational and department integrity and respect for others
• Promote continuing educational opportunities, participate in professional organizations and stay current in national best practices for student success
• Participate in Student Affairs and Student Life Team meetings and retreats
• Represent the college at the Council for Student Programs and Unions (CUSP) council meetings, and other meetings as appointed by the Dean of Student Life and Leadership
• Support supervisees in their desire to grow within the profession and continue their education
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Leadership or related fields or equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis
• A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in Student Activities, Student Leadership and Involvement or similar area
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising full-time staff
• Experience with fiscal management and budget development
• Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, customer service and communication skills.
• Effective organizational skills and ability to manage multiple programs/events/tasks simultaneously.
• Effective problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in change management
• Conflict management skills
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships across business lines
• Demonstrated skills in leading inclusive decision-making processes
• Demonstrated experience working with diverse colleagues and/or students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and knowledge of the principles of equity in decision-making
• Ability to be available for on-call duties on evenings and weekends, when required
• Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supervising full-time staff in Student Activities, Student Leadership and Involvement or similar function
• Experience and/or knowledge of student development theories and/or practices
• Experience working with student organization advising and student leadership development
• Experience working in 2-year college environments
