Laboratory Scientist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


Performs sample analyses of surface water and wastewater samples with an emphasis in wet chemical and/or microbiological testing, TOC, ELISA analyzer, and chromatography. Prepares reports and documentation required for compliance with laboratory procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 

  • Performs routine and non-routine analytical work on samples.
  • Performs water chemistry analyses for the purpose of compliance with wastewater effluent limits and/or in-stream water quality standards.
  • Operates and maintains various laboratory instruments including HPLC, IC, TOC, and ELISA Analyzer
  • Conducts bench tests.
  • Ensures quality control and quality assurance of samples and analysis.
  • Performs calculations, and enters test results into databases, and communicates test results to appropriate staff.
  • Develops, maintains, and revises laboratory documents or policies.
  • Develops new or revised test methods and standard operating procedures.
  • Responds to requests for information from the public and department personnel.

 

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE: 

 

  • Knowledge of laboratory research principles
  • Knowledge of wet chemical, chromatography, TOC, ELISA analyzer, and microbiological testing
  • Knowledge of conducting various bench tests
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory instruments software packages
  • Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Knowledge of laboratory information management systems (LIMS)


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)

 
Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant

 
OR 

 

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant
