SI-PASS Leader/Academic Tutor

SI-PASS (SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION-PEER ASSISTED STUDY SESSIONS) LEADER POSITION DESCRIPTION, Tutoring and College Success

MAJOR FUNCTION: 

SI-PASS (Supplemental Instruction-Peer Assisted Study Sessions) supports selected historically difficult courses with group study sessions scheduled outside of class time. The SI-PASS Leader facilitates these study sessions to improve students’ understanding of course material and encourage study skill development through collaborative activities. Weekly hourly commitment is 10.5 hours: three hours attending their supported course, six hours to plan and lead their study sessions, one hour for a weekly staff meeting and 30 minutes to meet with their faculty partner or TCS professional staff. SI-PASS Leaders are expected to actively promote their sessions during class time and use VandalStar communication methods for out of class promotion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or above and an A or B in the selected course OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the selected course.
  • Faculty approval to support the course.
  • Full semester commitment and ability to attend supported course.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to attend beginning of semester training and weekly training meetings.
  • Ability to consistently promote sessions to students in the course.
  • Passion for providing academic support to students.

 

ACADEMIC TUTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION, Vandals Tutoring (Tutoring & College Success)

MAJOR FUNCTION:

Tutors provide academic support in the form of tutoring to individuals and structured small groups to facilitate student academic success. Most tutors work an average of 4-10 hours per week, typically tutoring common courses for first- and second-year students. Tutors may be assigned to individual students or support students in small groups at drop-in tutoring. Specific tutors will also facilitate group tutoring workshops as needed determined by the Tutor, Academic Support Programs professional staff team, and course instructor. Tutors will have access to VandalStar to communicate directly with their students in a timely and purposeful way related to academic tutoring. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·  Grade of A or B in the course being tutored OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the course being tutored.

· Reference from one professor who can attest to your knowledge, skills and suitability to tutor.

· Ability to communicate knowledge of course content in a way that is meaningful to students.

· Ability to adapt to a variety of students with a wide range of abilities and diverse learning styles.

· Ability to demonstrate verbal and written command of the English language.

· Ability to attend and participate in monthly trainings and/or meetings. There will be a mandatory training the week before each semester begins.

Hourly Wage (Academic Tutor/SI-PASS Leader): $11.50-$13.00
