WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As a Natural Resource Specialist 2 – Assistant Project Leader you will help conduct studies important to management of fisheries resources in the Columbia River Basin and Oregon in general. Specifically, this position conducts and oversees sampling, summarizes and analyzes data, and prepares reports of findings on projects designed to 1) evaluate the effects of hydropower development on White Sturgeon in the Columbia and Willamette rivers, 2) monitor White Sturgeon recruitment in Oregon, 3) summarize and interpret existing White Sturgeon status data, 4) facilitate the development of species conservation and management objectives and related research, monitoring and evaluation measures, and 5) estimate recreational harvest of salmon and steelhead fisheries in Zone 6 (from Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam) from creel surveys.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked daily, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary daily, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a card or a copy of your card can be attached. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, they must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment.
  • This position requires the employee to travel by boat, motor vehicle or on foot while outdoors conducting field work.
  • The position requires working alone and in groups, work on weekends, night work, and work in inclement weather.
  • Shifts can be 10-12 hours in length, require extended travel to study sites in Oregon and Washington, and involve interaction with members of the public.
  • The ability to trailer and operate boats up to 26 feet long is required.
  • Work occasionally involves lifting and exertion for short time intervals.
  • Employee must be able to communicate with a variety of personalities in a professional manner.

CRIMINAL RECORDS/DMV CHECK:

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of biological/ecological/oceanographic experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or marine program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, AND a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological/oceanographic coursework; OR three additional years of  biological/ecological/oceanographic experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or marine program;

- OR-

One year of biological/ecological/oceanographic experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or marine program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, AND a Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological/oceanographic sciences;

- OR-

A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.

Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience managing complex databases including data quality control
  • Experience manipulating data and conducting statistical analyses using R Software
  • Ability to safely work as part of a diverse team in stressful situations and adverse weather conditions
  • Experience designing, planning, and leading field operations aboard small boats
  • Experience writing progress, technical, and scientific reports as well as giving presentations to technical or general audiences
