Public Health Internship (Spring 2025)

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is seeking motivated and adaptable individuals for a Public Health Internship. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in various areas of public health. Interns will have the chance to work in fields including Epidemiology, Lifespan Health Services, Health Promotion, Organizational Advancement, Health Data and Statistics, Occupational Licensure, and Health Services and Systems. Internship area will be determined based on interest and skill level to best meet the needs of the department.

 

Job Description: 

Epidemiology:

  • Assist in analyzing and interpreting epidemiological data.
  • Support the investigation of public health outbreaks and trends.
  • Contribute to the development of reports and presentations on epidemiological findings.

Lifespan Health Services:

  • Help in designing and implementing programs aimed at improving health across different life stages.
  • Support the coordination of services for maternal and child health, as well as elderly care.
  • Assist with outreach and education initiatives targeting diverse age groups.

Health Promotion:

  • Coordinate optimal funding through partners leading health initiatives.
  • Engage in frequent communication with providers and clients.
  • Support initiatives to promote healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors.

Organizational Advancement:

  • Help in assessing and improving internal processes and systems.
  • Assist with strategic planning and project management activities.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to enhance organizational efficiency.

Health Data and Statistics:

  • Support data collection, entry, and analysis efforts.
  • Assist in the creation of statistical reports and visualizations.
  • Help maintain databases and ensure data accuracy and integrity.

Occupational Licensure:

  • Aid in processing and reviewing applications for professional licensure.
  • Assist with compliance and regulatory documentation.
  • Support communication with licensees and stakeholders regarding licensure requirements.

Health Services and Systems:

  • Help evaluate and improve health service delivery systems.
  • Assist in researching and analyzing health service needs and gaps.
  • Support the development and implementation of service improvement initiatives.

 

Requirements/ Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Coursework/training or experience in public contact, customer service, and/or performing and applying office/clerical support procedures, including the use of a personal computer, associated software, and office equipment.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Promotion, Statistics, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data analysis software preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Adaptable and eager to learn about various aspects of public health.

Other: 

  • Must be currently enrolled in a college or university.
