Cabin Counselor

Position Purpose:

To further the mission of Camp Pinnacle by providing safe leadership for campers ages 7-15. Cabin counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. The management of these campers is key to helping CP’s mission, our 5 R’s, skills for life and great deal of fun in the outdoors. Safety, safety, safety!

Essential Job Functions:

  • Live in a cabin with 8 – 10 campers as their mentor, role model, and hero. 
  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times, implement safety guidelines, and apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication and relationship development. 
  • Ensure campers are physically and emotionally safe, comfortable, and practicing good hygiene.
  • Monitor each camper’s level of social interaction, program participation, and overall success.
  • Assist and lead campers in daily tasks such as:
  • Waking up and getting ready for the day
  • Maintaining cleanliness in shared and personal spaces such as cabin areas and bathhouses
  • Downtime
  • Evening circle and cabin bonding
  • Going to sleep
  • Manage a table of 6-8 campers in our dining hall and implement monitor campers for healthy eating habits and cleanliness.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers by doing the following:
  • Leading and assisting with the teaching of activities including in-camp overnights.
  • Actively participating and/or leading in program areas as assigned.
  • Creating a progression in activities.
  • Assist in the planning of C-days and camper choice days by submitting suggestions for activities.
  • Attend and assist in off-camp adventures as assigned.
  • Complete weekly updates and evaluations for each camper.
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of special events, evening programs, and all other aspects of programming as asked.
  • Attend daily and weekly staff meetings and participate in end of session evaluations

This is not an exhaustive list of essential job functions. All cabin counselors are expected to do anything and everything to lead to the success of camp’s mission and camper outcomes.

  • Support campers and help them grow
  • Manage undesired camper behavior in positive ways
  • Help campers who need extra support

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to communicate and work with children ages 7-15 and peers, and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching.
  • Ability to work long hours in the sun with little personal time and personal space.
