Finishing your studies? Thinking about next steps? This position may be for you. The computational position in the Erceg laboratory is ideally suited for applicants looking for a gap year after their graduation to develop and enhance their research skills.
We are looking for a highly motivated research technician to join the Erceg Lab in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology & Institute for Systems Genomics at the University of Connecticut. Our group is interested in understanding genome organization and gene regulation in multicellular organisms using genomic and imaging approaches. Our research lies at the intersection of genomics, genetics, developmental biology, and evolution.
The successful applicant will gain experience in going from a biological question, writing an effective script to data interpretation including use of command line, python, conda-supported virtual environment, and high-performance computing cluster resources. In addition, the applicant would be expected to obtain knowledge about the research area, further computational biology skills related to data analyses, and enhance their presentation skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, perform, and interpret computational analyses for genomic studies.
- General laboratory maintenance (ordering and receiving supplies, etc.) and management of safety protocols and compliance.
- Inventory management and record keeping.
- Assist other lab members with projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences by the start date.
- Background knowledge of genetics and genomics as demonstrated by field-specific publications, research experience and/or coursework. Coursework should include foundational courses (or equivalent) in genetics and/or genomics.
- Familiarity with command line and python would be welcome, but not required.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Motivation to work independently and collaboratively in a group setting.
- Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a temporary 6-month position with the possibility to extend.
