Fred Ochi Estate Intern

The Fred Ochi Estate is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to assist in preserving and promoting the legacy of Japanese American artist Fred Ochi. This is an excellent opportunity for a student or an emerging professional looking to gain hands-on experience in artist estate management, archival research, and arts administration.

About Fred Ochi

Fred Ochi (1913–2008) was a Japanese American artist known for his paintings depicting landscape views throughout Idaho, Wyoming and California. His work is deeply tied to the Japanese American experience and has been recognized for its cultural and historical significance.

Responsibilities

The intern will work closely with the owner of OCHI Gallery (Fred Ochi’s granddaughter) and Fred’s five sons, assisting with a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Website Development & Digital Presence
    • Assist in setting up and maintaining a basic website to showcase Fred Ochi’s work and legacy.
    • Organize and format images and digital content for online presentation.
  • Book Preparation
    • Help prepare materials for an upcoming book publication about Fred Ochi.
    • Assist in organizing images, historical context, and written content.
  • Archival Organization & Research
    • Assist with cataloging and document artwork information, ensuring accurate records.
    • Assistance with conducting relevant research on Fred Ochi’s work, exhibitions, and historical significance.
  • Outreach & Communications
    • Researching contacts and drafting communications for potential collaborations with curators, institutions etc.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must be a highly professional and effective communicator.
  • Ability to organize information accurately and efficiently.
  • Comfortable conducting research.
  • Familiarity with website building platforms, digital archiving, and basic design software is a plus. (Specifically, Google Workplace, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, monday.com)
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Willing to work 4–8 hours per week on an ongoing basis.
