Reforestation focused position

Description

Starker Forests, Inc., is seeking a problem-solving, hardworking individual to fill a full-time forester position. This field-based position will work predominantly with our silviculture and reforestation team and will work with the entire forestry staff in support of other forest operations as needed. The forester position will assist current reforestation staff in all aspects of the reforestation process at Starker Forests, Inc. The responsibilities of this job will change seasonally to meet the demands of each activity.

We own and manage over 95,000 acres of forestland, mostly within a one-hour drive from our office in Corvallis, Oregon.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Reforestation: Assist in tree planting operations, including guiding crews to sites, tracking seedling inventory, and conducting planting inspections.
  • Herbicide Application: Supervise spray crews, including loading out chemicals, supervising the batching process, and being on site during applications.
  • Plantation Maintenance: Includes stocking survey, vegetation competition monitoring, and animal damage exams.
  • Greenhouse: Sowing seed, water system monitoring, packing seedlings for out planting.
  • Seed Orchard: Maintenance, pollen collection, breeding, and seed procurement.
  • Slash Burning: Lighting slash piles, overseeing burn crews, and mop-up
  • Pre-harvest Stream Surveys: Conduct operational field surveys to establish or confirm flow status and features prior to timber harvest.
  • Timber Cruising: Conduct or assist with pre-harvest timber cruises
  • GIS: Create and share maps for projects.  
  • Support: Assist other foresters with various tasks as needed.
  • Other: Duties and tasks, as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or related field.
  • Experience: 0-3 years of experience in forest management or silviculture-related fields.
  • Certifications: Private Pesticide Applicators License, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
  • Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds safely and be able to twist and bend repeatedly while performing work activities. Applicants must be able to hike up and down slopes and uneven terrain, all while being exposed to stinging insects and poison oak. The person will be working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

 

  • Skills: 
    • Ability to read, understand and comply with product labels, safety, and policy and procedure manuals.
    • Working knowledge of the Oregon Forest Practices Act
    • Knowledge of western Oregon trees and plant species
    • Familiarity with ArcGIS, forest management software, and Microsoft Office
    • Interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with staff members, supervisors, and other business contacts.
    • Refined observation skills
    • Ability to navigate in the field without electronic GPS
    • Ability to speak Spanish, a plus but not required
