AmeriCorps Crisis Counselor at The Nord Center

Position Overview: As an AmeriCorps Member in the National Mental Health Corps, you will play a pivotal role in providing vital support to local crisis call centers as they adapt to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's transition to the 3-digit number 988. Your mission is to respond to calls from individuals in crisis, ensuring they receive the support they need.

Location: Immerse yourself in the dynamic environment of The Nord Center in Lorain, OH, and become a crucial part of a passionate team dedicated to making a positive change.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage in specialized suicide prevention and crisis intervention training
  • Answer calls, texts, and chats from individuals in crisis
  • Build capacity by recruiting and training volunteers for the crisis call center
  • Outreach to the local community to raise awareness about the 988 initiative
  • Utilize marketing strategies, including press releases and social media, to promote the program
  • Foster relationships with community mental health agencies to enhance resources
  • Contribute to the evaluation process, building evidence around the impact of services provided
  • Respect privacy while participating in national calls held by Health360
  • Assist with ongoing mental health community initiatives and regional events at the host site

Experience Preferred:

  • Personal or professional knowledge of mental health topics
  • Understanding of mental health issues and available resources
  • Knowledge about mental health resources at both the community and state levels
  • Positive attitude towards individuals with mental illnesses
  • Enthusiasm for reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and addiction disorders
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Crisis work experience preferred but not required

Details and Benefits:

  • 10-month service commitment with flexible dates determined by the host site supervisor
  • Receive certification in an evidence-based suicide prevention intervention
  • Full-time AmeriCorps position with 1700 service hours (40 hours per week)
  • Part-time position available (21 hours/week)
  • Generous stipend of $23,000 paid biweekly (22 checks)
  • Education Award of $7,395 upon completion of the service commitment
