Position Title: Sustainability Policy and Communications Intern
Organization: Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance (LANCSA)
Location: Los Angeles, CA (remote/hybrid) We all work virtually; most meetings and events are held virtually, but not all, so it is ideal if you are located in the city of LA
Hours and Duration: Hours to be negotiated (minimum 10 per week, with some weekends and evenings required) , minimum 3 month-commitment
About the LANCSA:
The Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance (LANCSA) is a community-based organization dedicated to advancing sustainability and resilience across the city of Los Angeles. Established in 2015, the LANCSA operates through advocacy, sharing of best practices, and community action. We collaborate with neighborhood councils, government bodies, environmental organizations, and community stakeholders to effect positive change in our neighborhoods and city.
Position Overview:
The LANCSA is offering an opportunity for people passionate about environmental advocacy and engagement. As a Sustainability Policy and Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with LANCSA's board and committee members to support various sustainability initiatives, campaigns, and outreach efforts. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience in environmental advocacy, project management, and community outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in the LANCSA’s committee (advocacy, energy, transportation, and trees) meetings via Zoom
- Assist in research and analysis on key sustainability issues affecting Los Angeles, including but not limited to climate change, biodiversity, housing, transportation, trees, waste management, and renewable energy
- Help organize and facilitate community forums, workshops, and events on sustainability topics
- Assist in maintaining and updating the LANCSA's website, social media channels, and outreach materials
- Help draft monthly newsletter
- Help provide information that representatives need in order to be able to vote, and track voting
- Support advocacy efforts by drafting materials, letters, and campaign communications and speaking at City Council meetings
- Help develop and implement outreach strategies to engage neighborhood councils, government officials, and community stakeholders
- Represent the LANCSA at events and engage with community members who approach our table
- Perform other related tasks as needed
Qualifications:
- Passion for sustainability, environmental advocacy, and community engagement
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Minimum two years of college coursework completed
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Proficiency with both Google docs and Canva and familiarity with social media platforms preferred
- Previous experience in environmental advocacy, community organizing, or related fields is a plus
- University major or coursework in environmental studies, policy, sustainability, or related fields preferred
- Bilingual skills a plus
