Thermal Ratings Co-op

PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that plays a vital role in the U.S. electric system. PJM ensures the reliability of the largest centrally dispatched control area in North America by coordinating the movement of electricity in all or parts of 13 states. PJM, acting neutrally and independently, operates the largest 
competitive wholesale electricity market in the world. PJM manages a sophisticated regional planning process for generation and transmission expansion to assure 
future electric.

EMS Support provides front-line engineering for the PJM control room. We support the three primary applications of the EMS – (Advanced) Network Applications, SCADA (Telemetry) and AGC (Generation Control). This work ranges from emergency real-time 24/7 support, to daily O&M, to long-term EMS design and policy formulation. 

Responsibilities:

The EMS Support coop’s primary responsibility is the real-time upkeep of changes to thermal limits (and other limits) for equipment in PJM’s territory, and successfully instantiating those changes into the production EMS, including all of the monitoring, change control, verification and customer interactions involved. 

When that role is successfully achieved, advanced co-ops can proceed to more complicated EMS change jobs as time and opportunity allows. 

Required Skills:

  • Adaptable between individual work (personal responsibility) and team coordination (accountable and communicative)
  • Learning agility
  • Discipline for working in a critical real-time production environment (exercise of good judgement and self-control)
  • High responsiveness to time-sensitive tasks (ability to monitor and react)

Preferred Skills:

  • Basic understanding of electrical theories and terminology
  • Basic familiarity with data structures and formats
  • Experience with any form of database, direct or through a UI

PJM will not be providing Housing/Transportation assistance, the successful candidate must be able to come on-campus when needed.
